Dmitry Sitkovetsky conductor

BACH Goldberg Variations BWV 988
(Dmitry Sitkovetsky’s transcription for Strings)
ČAJKOVSKIJ Serenade for Strings Op.48

First rate violinist Dimitry Sitkovetsky is here only to conduct for this program. In 1977 Dimitry Sitkovetsky left the Soviet Union for twenty-three years to study in New York and it’s clear that his fellow Russian Čajkovski is a daily bread for him. He presents the Serenata per archi op.48, a tribute to Mozart’s classicism but not through the actual imitation of the style, but by the sense of serenity and freedom poured on every page of this composition from 1880. Making up most of the hour long program is the Variazioni Goldberg di Bach consisting of thirty transformations of an Aria which, according to legend, was composed with the intention to be played for the infants of aristocratic society. It is interesting to hear them played by an orchestra because they are written for harpsichord (and are usually done by pianists). Today’s version of strings is a transcript by Sitkovetsky himself. Fortunately, he then pushed many other writers to translate for orchestra.
