In the refectory of the Museum of San Marco—where the art of Beato Angelico has accompanied the daily life of the Dominican convent for centuries—the series Places of Listening begins, with a program that spans the European nineteenth century, offering a fresh perspective on opera.

The Prelude from Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner, in a rare version for strings, preserves the tension of the original in a more intimate setting. The String Nonet by Giovanni Sgambati, on the other hand, reflects an attempt to forge an Italian path in instrumental music while drawing on European tradition.

Performing the program is a string ensemble composed of musicians from the Orchestra della Toscana, which opens the series by bringing great music to a venue already steeped in art history.
