    At the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Empoli, Diego Ceretta conducts the Orchestra della Toscana in a programme spanning different eras and musical styles, from the early 20th century to the great 19th-century symphonic repertoire.

    The ORT opens with Igor Stravinsky’s Dumbarton Oaks, a chamber concerto from the composer’s neoclassical period, characterised by clear, contrapuntal writing. The highlight of the evening sees Silvia Chiesa perform Alfredo Casella’s Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 58, one of the most significant works in the 20th-century Italian repertoire.

    The concert concludes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6, Op. 68, ‘Pastoral’, in which the reference to nature is translated into a symphonic form of extraordinary balance, expressive richness and evocative power.
