For the traditional Christmas Concert at the Teatro Petrarca in Arezzo, Diego Ceretta conducts the Orchestra della Toscana in a programme combining works by Bach, Brahms and Schumann.

The concert opens with Johann Sebastian Bach’s Three Chorales for organ, in Ottorino Respighi’s orchestral transcription, which reinterprets Bach’s writing through the colours and nuances of the twentieth-century orchestra. This is followed by Johannes Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a, a fine example of formal balance and rich timbre, built upon a progressive transformation of the thematic material.

The concert concludes with Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, Op. 38, ‘Spring’, a work imbued with a luminous character and a strong romantic impetus, which brings the concert to a close with a hymn to rebirth and vital energy, entrusting the orchestra with one of the most celebrated works in the nineteenth-century symphonic repertoire.
