Half a century ago, on February 19th, composer Luigi Dallapiccola passed away at his home on Via Romana in Florence. He was the first in Italy to write twelve-tone music. Born in Istria, Florence became his home from 1922, when he moved there to study at the “Cherubini” Conservatory, where he later taught generations of students, some of whom went on to have spectacular careers, such as Sylvano Bussotti. The ORT commemorates the composer with one of his most poetic works, the Piccolo Concerto per Muriel Couvreux for piano and orchestra, a piece conceived between 1939 and 1941, during the war and at a time when racial laws were severely affecting his family (his wife Laura was Jewish), although nothing of the tragic nature of that period is reflected in the music. The program also includes another piano concerto from the 20th century, Maurice Ravel‘s Piano Concerto in G major, written around 1930. It is a work of neoclassical clarity, composed in the spirit of Mozart, yet masterfully combining various elements, including jazz motifs and circus themes, with dazzling brilliance.
The soloist for both concertos is Benedetto Lupo, one of Italy’s finest pianists, whose international career began in 1989 when he won third prize at the “Van Cliburn” Competition in the United States. He is also an active teacher, serving as a professor in the advanced courses at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. On the podium is Markus Stenz, former principal conductor of the orchestras of Baltimore, Seoul, and the Netherlands Radio, a frequent guest of the ORT, and artistic director of the Cantiere di Montepulciano from 1989 to 1995. He will also conduct Symphony No. 100 by Franz Joseph Haydn, known as the “Military” Symphony for its occasional use of battlefield-like sounds.
