    For several seasons now, Erina Yashima’s presence in the ORT’s programs has become indispensable, as talents like hers on the podium are rarely found. Of Japanese origin but holding a German passport, Yashima studied in Germany and Vienna. A pivotal year for her was 2015, when she attended the Verdian Opera Academy in Ravenna led by Riccardo Muti, subsequently becoming his assistant in Chicago. Around the same time, she also assisted during rehearsals with Esa-Pekka Salonen, Christoph Eschenbach, Zubin Mehta, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Today, she is the first female conductor of the Komische Oper in Berlin. For her return to the ORT, she faces two cornerstones of the 19th-century Viennese repertoire: Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2. These works span the century, with the symphony debuting in 1803, while the concerto was composed in 1878. One is the work of a young man in his thirties (on the verge of deafness), gradually moving away from the influences of Mozart and Haydn from whom he initially drew inspiration. The other is the mature work of a forty-five-year-old Brahms, in the midst of a creative surge. Brahms’ concerto was inspired by the greatest violinist of his time, Joseph Joachim, a close friend and trusted advisor in writing the solo part. In this program, the concerto is performed by the Hungarian violinist Kristóf Baráti, described by a reviewer as “a violinist who draws attention to the music without attracting too much attention to himself.” Baráti plays a 1703 Stradivarius.
