    Schumann, the mentor, and Brahms, the predestined. In 19th-century Germany, Robert Schumann took on the heavy legacy of Beethoven, a towering figure he stubbornly tried to conquer. But in his view, he ultimately failed. Thus, he passed this monumental task to a young composer, a talent that appears once in a generation: Johannes Brahms, whom he entrusted with a historic mission that weighed heavily on him. The long-awaited symphony, which Schumann encouraged him to write as early as 1853 (just before Schumann’s tragic final days in a mental asylum), was only completed twenty-three years later, in 1876. It became the first of four symphonies, the most tormented and complex, with a finale that evokes Beethoven’s Ode to Joy from the Ninth Symphony. Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 – which some at the time dubbed “Beethoven’s Tenth” – will be conducted by principal conductor Diego Ceretta.
    Preceding it is Schumann‘s Cello Concerto, which the composer described as “a serene piece.” For this occasion, it will be performed by Enrico Bronzi, a musician of many interests: a member of the Trio di Parma, a teacher at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and artistic director of festivals and concert seasons. The program also includes a piece from 2018, Impressioni surrealiste by Fabio Massimo Capogrosso, a forty-year-old Umbrian composer now widely recognized for his soundtracks in Marco Bellocchio’s latest films Effetto notte and Rapito.
