The title, Sextuors Concertants, immediately suggests the idea of dialogue: six string instruments that, despite their chamber form, move in the spirit of the concert, emphasising now one and now the other, in a continuous interplay of exchanges and relays.

It is precisely this concertante dimension, i.e. participatory and brilliant, that links the two masterpieces on the programme. The Grande sestetto concertante is a refined 19th-century transcription of Mozart‘s famous Sinfonia concertante K 364, originally conceived for orchestra and two soloists. In this version, the score becomes more compact and intimate, but retains all the charm of the dialogue between the voices, in a perfect balance of virtuosity and cantabile.

Tchaikovsky, with his Souvenir de Florence, seems to respond to this idea with a different language, more romantic and passionate, but equally concertante: each instrument has a well-defined role, and the musical fabric, rich and layered, maintains a continuous tension between lyrical momentum and architectural rigour. It is a composition that looks to the European tradition but with a profoundly Russian soul, and that in the sextet finds an ideal form to express both intimacy and collective energy.

Two different ways of understanding musical dialogue, two eras, two expressive worlds. A single idea: that of six instruments that do not accompany, but tell together.
