    Mozart‘s Quartet K 575 is one of three “Prussian” quartets commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia. The fact that the latter was a cellist justifies the elaborate cello part that stands out in dialogue with that of the first violin. The key of D major (according to Schubart’s treatise ‘Aesthetics of the Art of Music’) was associated with gaiety, brilliance, but also with the desire to conceal certain feelings by reaching a more intimate, recollected dimension, at times with a veiled melancholy. The use of this tonality perhaps reflects the time when Mozart wrote these three quartets: in June 1789 he had to sell them for a derisory sum to a publisher in Vienna because he was forced by necessity and tormented by ill health.

    Shostakovich’s Quartet No. 8 is sealed with a meaningful dedication: “To the victims of fascism and war”. The composer found a way to express through this composition his emotional state deeply disturbed by the sight of the devastation of the city of Dresden, razed to the ground by British and American bombing supported by the Soviet Union. Despite the profound drama of the composition, we recall how Shostakovich used to exhort the listener of his music not only to grasp the raw truth of its meaning, but also to proclaim how wonderful life is.
