The link between Giuseppe Verdi and Shakespeare spans his entire career, with operas such as Macbeth, Othello and Falstaff, alongside projects that were never realised, such as Hamlet and King Lear. His first encounter with the Bard came in 1847, when the impresario Alessandro Lanari of the Teatro della Pergola in Florence commissioned him to write a new opera for the Carnival season.

Set in misty Scotland, Macbeth combines fantastical and dramatic elements: witches, apparitions and omens accompany the protagonist and Lady Macbeth’s descent into a vortex of power, madness and guilt.

The choice of subject matter reflects the romantic taste of the time, but Verdi transforms it into a profound investigation of ambition and moral ruin, opening up a new path in his musical theatre.
