In the Cenacolo di San Salvi, frescoed by Andrea del Sarto, the great Last Supper unfolds with monumental naturalness in an atmosphere of contemplative silence.

It is within this space that the concert by the Hortensia Quartet takes place, dedicated to two pivotal works of 19th-century chamber music: Giuseppe Verdi’s “only” string quartet and Felix Mendelssohn’s “last”.

Written after the death of his sister Fanny, Mendelssohn’s Quartet No. 6, Op. 80 is imbued with intense emotional tension. Alongside it, Verdi’s Quartet in E minor reveals a surprising side to the great opera composer, combining energy with contrapuntal refinement.

Two profound works which, in the silence of the cenacle, find a particularly focused listening experience.
