  • The Last Supper at Sant’Apollonia

The I Luoghi dell’Ascolto festival continues in Florence, a project that brings music to the city’s Renaissance salons, creating a direct dialogue between artistic heritage and the auditory experience

The second event takes place in the evocative Cenacolo di Sant’Apollonia, a lesser-known venue of extraordinary historical and artistic value, offering a unique setting for listening to music.
The project was conceived to create a dialogue between the music of the 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗮 with the Renaissance cenacles of Florence, and is promoted by the 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶 𝗻𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗧𝗼𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗮 in collaboration with the 𝗙𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗢𝗥𝗧 and supported by the 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮 – 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝘇𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼.

The Cenacolo di Sant’Apollonia: a hidden gem waiting to be rediscovered

Located in Via XXVII Aprile, the Cenacolo di Sant’Apollonia is now a state museum, part of the Regional Directorate of Museums of Tuscany. Once part of the Benedictine monastery founded in 1339, the space has undergone transformations and periods of neglect over the centuries, until its rediscovery in modern times.

For a long time, due to the nuns’ cloistered life, the cenacolo was excluded from the main historical sources on Florence. It was only after the convent was dissolved in the 19th century that its value emerged, revealing one of the most fascinating settings of the early Renaissance.

Andrea del Castagno’s Last Supper: art and perspective

The centrepiece of the refectory is Andrea del Castagno’s imposing fresco of the Last Supper, painted around 1447 and covering the entire wall of the refectory.

The scene unfolds within a rigorously structured architectural space, constructed according to a precise geometric perspective, in which every element contributes to creating a solemn and balanced atmosphere. The apostles sit around a long table, whilst Judas, isolated on the opposite side, breaks the harmony of the composition in accordance with an established iconographic tradition.

Above the main scene are episodes of the Resurrection, Crucifixion and Deposition, now preserved separately for conservation reasons.

    An immersive listening experience

In this context, music is not merely performed, but becomes part of a space that amplifies its meaning. The cenacle, originally designed as a place for daily interaction, is once again a living space, where the audience is invited to listen more attentively and mindfully.

I Luoghi dell’Ascolto series thus creates an experience that combines history, art and music, restoring a contemporary function to these spaces without altering their identity.

    The series continues

This second event confirms the success of a project that is attracting increasing attention, encouraging audiences to discover lesser-known venues through music.

This journey continues with the upcoming concerts, all of which are already sold out, with the exception of the one on 21 June, which will take place in the cloister of the Museum of San Marco. More information -> bit.ly/Cenacoli_21giugno
