    A programme that spans the European nineteenth century, offering a fresh perspective on opera.

    Richard Wagner’s Prelude from Tristan und Isolde, in a rare chamber version for strings, retains all the harmonic tension and emotional intensity of the original, yet renders it in a more intimate, almost whispered manner. Alongside Wagner, the String Nonet by Giovanni Sgambati – a central figure in late 19th-century Italian musical culture – tells another story: that of a composer who looked to the great European tradition whilst seeking to forge an Italian path in instrumental music.

    Performing the programme is a String ensemble comprising musicians from the Orchestra della Toscana, the protagonists of a concert that opens the festival with a symbolic gesture: bringing great music to a place where the history of art has already left a profound mark.
