The Hortensia Quartet’s concert is built around two of the most significant works in the nineteenth-century chamber music repertoire. The programme title plays on a little curiosity: ‘the only one’ refers to Verdi’s quartet, as the composer wrote just one; ‘the last’ refers to Mendelssohn’s Quartet Op. 80, the last great chamber music work he composed shortly before his death.

Felix Mendelssohn’s Quartet Op. 80, written after the death of his sister Fanny, is a score permeated by intense emotional tension, in which the composer’s characteristic lyricism is imbued with dramatic and restless accents. Alongside Mendelssohn, Giuseppe Verdi’s Quartet in E minor surprises with its energy and contrapuntal refinement: a unique chamber music interlude in the output of the great Italian opera composer, revealing a different facet of his compositional style. A tribute on the 125th anniversary of his death.
