    Rhythm, dance and orchestral colour are at the heart of the Carnival Concerto conducted by Jaume Santonja, at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Empoli.

    The Orchestra della Toscana opens with Aaron Copland’s Three Latin American Sketches, followed by Aconcagua, a bandoneon concerto by Astor Piazzolla, performed here on the accordion by João Barradas. The transition from Latin America to Europe highlights different approaches to dance and theatrical gesture.

    The second half pairs Gabriel Fauré’s suite Masques et bergamasques, Op. 112, with the suite from El amor brujo by Manuel de Falla, in a journey that moves from French refinement to the theatrical power of Spanish music.
