Four years after winning the “Sir Georg Solti” competition in Germany and the “Guido Cantelli” competition in Novara, Tianyi Lu is now a highly sought-after conductor in Europe and the United States. She is a leading figure among the thirty-somethings on the podium. Born in Shanghai, she moved with her parents to New Zealand, where she grew up attending an all-girls high school. This experience, she confessed in an interview, made her realize that women can and must do whatever they believe is right.
For her return to the ORT, she is joined by pianist Roberto Cominati, a profound and reserved virtuoso whose international career began in 1993 after winning first prize at the “Ferruccio Busoni” Competition in Bolzano. In Richard Strauss‘s Burleske, he must demonstrate steely hands to capture the brilliant substance of a piece where the piano converses on equal terms with a dazzling, worldly orchestra. Surrounding this Strauss, Lu arranges a funeral elegy and a youthful masterpiece by Johannes Brahms. In Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten (1977), Estonian composer Arvo Pärt mourns the death of the English composer Britten. The Serenade Op.11 is a work by a 30-year-old Brahms, then employed at the German court of Detmold while waiting to steer his future in a different direction.
