Gioachino Rossini’s Cinderella to a libretto by Jacopo Ferretti (first performed at the Teatro Valle in Rome on 25 January 1817) takes Perrault’s fairy tale as a model, but frees it from any supernatural element. We have known since childhood the adventures of Cinderella, a naïve and reserved young woman, victim of an overbearing family, who thanks to virtue, grace and good heart conquers a generous and wise prince. In this work, the prototype of the fable evolves and falls into reality, stripping the characters of the indistinct guise of banal stereotypes to make them defined and temperamentally complex entities.
