At the Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, the birthplace of Giacomo Puccini, Diego Ceretta conducts the Orchestra della Toscana in a programme paying tribute to the great Lucca-born composer with Crisantemi, juxtaposing it with the great symphonic tradition of Johannes Brahms and featuring pianist Pietro De Maria.

The programme opens with Puccini’s famous elegiac piece for strings, followed by Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 83, a sweeping work that combines virtuosic writing, chamber-like density and a strong integration between the piano and the orchestra.

In the second half, the ORT performs Symphony No. 3, Op. 90, a compact and intense work, characterised by a distinctive variety of expressive moods and one of the most intimate finales in Brahms’s symphonic output. The concert forms part of the celebrations for the Festa della Toscana.
