The two pieces chosen for this concert feature a singular ensemble, combining strings and two horns in a rare and fascinating balance. Usually, the horns are used to support the texture of the strings, but here they emerge as protagonists, capable of imparting a character as playful as it is virtuosic to the music.
Mozart, with his Ein musikalischer Spaß K.522, offers an ironic and parodistic piece, in which he plays with the music itself. Deliberately “wrong” notes, exaggerated dissonances and sudden changes of direction create an effect of surprise and amusement, which well reflects the composer’s more playful side. Mozart was intimately familiar with the horn, having written for his hornist friend Joseph Leutgeb, and in this piece he uses the instrument to accentuate the burlesque character of the work, as he had already done by inserting humorous notes in his Horn Concertos.

Of an entirely different spirit is Beethoven‘s Sextet for two horns and strings op.81b, a solid, structured work in which the horns become instruments of pure virtuosity. Beethoven entrusts them with brilliant and technically demanding passages, taking the writing to an almost concertante level. The form is rigorous and perfectly balanced, but the role of the horns goes far beyond accompaniment: they are protagonists, capable of lending the composition a noble elegance.
The juxtaposition of these two pieces allows us to explore the expressive possibilities of this unusual ensemble: from the lightness and irony of Mozart to the virtuosic brilliance of Beethoven, for a concert that surprises and fascinates.
