Arthur Honegger‘s Pastorale d’été opens the evening with its rarefied and contemplative atmosphere. Composed in 1920, this musical page is a true Impressionist sound picture, evoking an Alpine summer of light, stillness and natural breaths. The delicate timbres and serene melodic lines create a suspended music that suggests moods, images and sensations rather than narration.

This is followed by the Flute Concerto op. 29 by Carl Stamitz, a refined example of the galant style, in which the flute plays the leading role in an elegant interplay between virtuosity and cantabile. The performer, Viola Brambilla, gives voice to an agile and brilliant instrument, capable of dialoguing with the orchestra in a continuous exchange of energy and grace. Stamitz, a leading exponent of the Mannheim School, creates a lively and refined concerto, where the balance between form and expressiveness is particularly successful.

Franz Joseph Haydn‘s Oxford Symphony No. 92, one of the most famous and representative of his symphonic catalogue, closes the programme. Commissioned for Oxford University, this symphony is a perfect example of Haydn’s ability to combine formal elegance, rhythmic vitality and subtle irony. With its dynamic contrasts, thematic surprises and brilliant orchestration, it is a page that enchants and entertains, always keeping the listener’s attention.

Conducting the orchestra will be Giampaolo Pretto, whose musical sensitivity accompanies the entire programme in a journey through epochs and styles, but which finds a common thread in music’s ability to evoke images, emotions and inner worlds.
