Powaqqatsi continues the journey begun in 1983 by director Godfrey Reggio and composer Philip Glass, investigating the causes that led Third World countries to undergo encroaching industrialization. Like his predecessor, Powaqqatsi (which means “parasitic life” in hopi language) relies on a dense visual language, composed of time-lapses and overlays, which perfectly intersects with Glass’s minimalist compositions, performed live for the occasion by the Philip Glass Ensemble conducted by Michael Riesman.

Since 1983’s Koyaanisqatsi to 2002’s Naqoyqatsi, passing through Powaqqatsi (1988), Reggio and Glass take us on a journey from the ancient to the contemporary, from wilderness to the ubiquitous industrial revolution, exploring what life has become: without any balance, in continuous transformation and haunted by conflicts and wars, destruction and pollution. Yet, our eyes and ears are continually the target of wonder and excitement.
