A symphony that is a will. The Pathétique is Tchaikovsky’s last score. A few days after the first performance, which took place on October 16th, 1893 in Saint Petersburg, the composer died. During those days, while cholera was raging in the city, he had drunk unboiled water. Perhaps imprudently or perhaps on purpose, to escape the scandal caused by the discovery of his homosexual relationship with a descendant of the Russian aristocracy. It is a narrative score: Tchaikovsky explicitly tells you about the struggle of an individual, himself, against hostile fate. And in the end, the man’s defeat arrives, represented by a painful slow movement that closes the Pathétique as a symphony had never been concluded before, in a sea of tears. The Pathétique is a testing ground for every conductor. In her second program with the ORT, Erina Yashima takes it on; she is a conductor born in Germany of Japanese parents, currently at the head of the Berlin Komische Oper, but disputed by the greatest orchestras on the globe. With her is a budding cello talent: Ettore Pagano, born in 2003 and already an international cello star. He graduated in 2021 from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, in Rome, also a pupil of Enrico Dindo, David Geringas and Antonio Meneses. It is his turn to face one of the most formidable Concertos written for the cello, that of Dvořák.
