    In Ferrara on stage

At the Teatro Comunale, where carriages once crossed the Rotonda Foschini and illuminated stages have echoed with applause night after night, more than two centuries of history, music and city life unfold at the heart of the city — on stage in Ferrara.

In the heart of Ferrara, near the Castello Estense, lies the Teatro Comunale. It has been a cultural symbol for over two centuries. It is not just a theatre, but an institution spanning eras, tastes, and social transformations. Yet, it maintains its core purpose: to connect the city with performing arts. Unforgettable performances are staged in Ferrara.

Its history dates back to the 18th century. At that time, Ferrara, with its rich theatrical tradition dating back to the 15th century, felt the need for a public theatre. One that would reflect the changing society. Between 1773 and 1797, designed by Antonio Foschini and Cosimo Morelli, the new Teatro Comunale took shape. It was built in a strategic area, then called “Isola del Cervo”, opposite the Castello Estense that It was a complex project, marked by delays, revisions, and controversies. It finally ended with the inauguration on 2 September 1798, featuring Cimarosa’s Gli Orazi e i Curiazi.

Externally, the theatre has a sober façade, punctuated by seven arches. These arches interact with the urban space without imposing excessive monumentality. This choice reveals a modern vision of theatre architecture. It blends harmoniously into the city context. Inside, however, the Comunale shows elegance: an elliptical hall, five tiers of boxes, and a layout designed for an immersive experience. It is ideal for any show in Ferrara.

A distinctive feature of the building is the Rotonda Foschini, an elliptical courtyard originally designed for carriages. These carriages passed between Corso Martiri della Libertà and Corso Giovecca. Today, after redevelopment, the Rotonda is a lively pedestrian space. It hosts meetings, events, and socialising. This confirms that the theatre interacts with the city and scene, truly representing Ferrara on stage.

During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Teatro Comunale underwent restoration. It experienced periods of difficulty and phases of revival. Its connection with Claudio Abbado was decisive. Over the years, Abbado chose Ferrara for his activities, bringing an international flavour to the theatre. He contributed to the improvement of its acoustics. Since 2014, the Comunale officially bears his name, as a tribute to his profound impact on its history in Ferrara.

In this context rich in memory and vitality, on Friday 9 and Sunday 11, the stage of the Comunale will welcome the Orchestra della Toscana. They will perform La Cenerentola, bringing Rossini’s masterpiece back to the stage. This place, for over two centuries, continues to renew its dialogue with music, theatre, and the public.
